Does the Celestron SkyPortal WiFi Module work with NexStar SLT and NexStar 8SE?
Yes. The SkyPortal WiFi Module works with the full NexStar SLT series and the NexStar SE series (4SE, 5SE, 6SE and 8SE). It also works with most current Celestron computerized mounts, including the AVX, CGEM II, CGX and CPC. It plugs into the telescope’s AUX port or hand control port. It is not compatible with the older NexStar 5 (pre-SE model). If you aren’t sure about your telescope, contact Modern Telescopes before ordering and we’ll confirm compatibility.

Do I need internet or mobile network at a dark-sky site?
No. The module creates its own WiFi network, and your phone or tablet connects to it directly, so you don’t need a router, internet or mobile signal. The SkyPortal app takes the date, time and location from your phone automatically. That makes it ideal for remote observing spots in places like Ladakh, Spiti, Rann of Kutch or the Western Ghats. Tip: install and open the SkyPortal app once at home before your trip.

Does the SkyPortal WiFi Module work with SkySafari?
Yes. Besides Celestron’s free SkyPortal app (built by the SkySafari team), the module works with the paid SkySafari Plus and SkySafari Pro apps for telescope control. The free basic version of SkySafari doesn’t support telescope control. The current version of the module also works with Celestron’s CPWI software on a Windows PC.

What is the difference between the SkyPortal WiFi Module and SkyQ Link?
The SkyPortal WiFi Module (item #93973) was earlier sold as the SkyQ Link 2. Celestron renamed it when it launched the SkyPortal app. The original SkyQ Link was an older first-generation module that worked with the discontinued SkyQ app. The current module has newer hardware, works with the SkyPortal and CPWI software, and supports both direct-connect and access-point modes.

Can I still use the hand controller with the WiFi module?
On mounts with a free AUX port, like the NexStar 8SE, AVX, CGEM II, CGX and CPC, you can keep the hand controller plugged in and use both. On the NexStar SLT series, the module plugs into the hand control port, so you control the telescope from your phone instead. You can switch back to the hand controller at any time by swapping the plug.
